The Truth About Uni | How I Chose Everything

The Truth About Uni | How I Chose Everything

The first post in our Truth About Uni collab! This week we are going to talk about our university and how we chose everything. First I need to explain a few things, because the school system in Holland isn’t the same as in the UK.

In high school you can do three different levels, which correspond with the amount of years you spend in high school. The lowest level spends 4 years in school, the middel level 5 years and the highest level 6 years. Corresponding to the level you did in high school you can do an education. Basically there are also three levels of ‘universities’ in Holland. If you finished for example the education on the lowest level, you can (if you want) start  a following education in the middle level. I know that this kind of school system isn’t very common in other countries and I hope it makes a little sense.

My university journey started in high school. I started high school in the highest level, but in year 5 I chose to go back to the middle level. During that time in my teens I had pretty bad performance anxiety, which completely blocked me during my tests and exams. I started year 4 again, but now in the middle level. This gave me time to clear my mind and think about what I wanted to do after high school.

I choose to go to study Physical Education, because I really like to help and teach children. In my 25 facts about me I mentioned that I did elite gymnastics when I was younger. This also made me interested in sports and teaching. Besides that both my mum and dad are PE teachers. So yes the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I chose to go study in The Hague, which is about 2 hours away by public transport. That’s why I chose to live in The Hague.

During my education in PE I started noticing that I really liked the theoretical side of movement. This interest became so big that I chose to expand my bacholors with a year and follow a premaster. This was a year at the highest level of university, where you could follow a few courses at the highest level to prepare myself for my masters. To make our system even more confusing: with the bachelors degree in the middle level and your premaster you can start a master at the highest level university.

This is the route to where I’m today. I’m currently in my first year of my master Human Movement Science at the VU University in Amsterdam. So after I graduated in The Hague I moved to Amsterdam. The choice to go study my master degree in Amsterdam wasn’t very difficult. The only other university who offers this master is in Groningen, which is about 3 hours away by public transport. Besides that my university in The Hague had an agreement with the university in Amsterdam about doing our premaster during our PE study. This made the choice for me to do my masters in Amsterdam much easier.

I hope this all makes sense! If you have any questions about why I chose everything let me know in the comments below! I hope to see you all in two weeks for the next post in this collab. And don’t forget to check out the post that JasmineToriKateSaffronSophieBex and Jen wrote about their university decisions.
