How to deal with the pressure of numbers

number, followers, instagram, frustrations

It could be that after reading the title of this post you have absolutely no clue what I’m going to talk about today. The pressure of numbers could basically mean anything. I could talk about the pressure I felt in high school during maths or the pressure of number considering followers. If you thought I was going to talk about the second option you were right! I think nowadays the amount (read number) of followers on your social media channels, blog or youtube channel seem very important. The importance of this could put a lot of pressure on you as a content creator, which hold the same for the pageviews or views on your blog or youtube channel.

My philosophy

I’ve always said to myself I don’t want to focus on the amount of followers, because I want to keep enjoying what I’m doing and creating. Though, I have to admit that this is sometimes very hard. Brands and companies ask for your pageviews if you want to be put on their pr list. Or you get rejected to collaborate with a brand, because you don’t have enough followers on your social media channels. This could all be very frustrating and don’t forget we’ve all been there and might still are there. So I wrote down a few tips how you can try to not make it frustrating for yourself.

1. Focus on what you like about creating content

You can create loads of content, but when you’re not passionate anymore about the things you write your readers can see this immediately. So try to remember yourself what you like about creating content. I love the creative part and the creative outlet of making content. I also love editing my video’s, pictures and coming up with new ideas over and over again!

2. Focus on why you want to create content

What’s your ultimate goal though creating content, besides having the dream to become famous? Try to set a goal or motivation for yourself that you can reach without any influence from other people/companies/etc. For me that’s inspiring and helping others. I hope that with the content I create I inspire other people and help other people with the things that I come across in my daily life.

3. Try to improve yourself every time

If you try to improve yourself every time you create content you are not comparing yourself with others. This way you’re less focussed on being better than someone else or the amount of followers other people have. You say competitive within yourself and there is no other influence from ‘outside’. I compare it with an example from the time I still did competitive gymnastics. If I would set my goal during a competition to win that particular competition. I could have a perfect competition, but still not be the best. If other people are just better than I am, I would never make that goal. If my goal would be to have a perfect competition without any major mistakes I can always achieve that goal, because there is no ‘outside’ influence involved. In this case other people that are just better than I am. That’s also how I try to see improvement in content creation. I always try to compare it with my own previous work instead of other people’s work.

I hope that these tips and focus points can help you to reduce the stress, pressure or frustration you have towards the amount of followers/pageviews/etc. Don’t forget to enjoy and remember the things that you’ve already achieved with your blog, youtube channel or instagram account! Hence my Weleda products in the picture, since at the moment I’m a very proud ambassador for them! If you have any other tips please leave them in the comments below and let’s help each other!
