Berdorf is a beautiful area in Luxembourg just about four hours driving south-east from Amsterdam. It’s a perfect place to go rock climbing for a couple of days, which is just what I did two weeks ago. The only thing you have to get lucky with is the weather, but besides that going there is a success recipe for a great weekend.
If you go rock climbing you probably stay at a campsite near the place you can climb. Most of the time if you are a climber you’ll stay in a tent. I know that there are some places where that’s impossible (for example on Kalymnos). During the two times that I’ve been to Berdorf we stayed in a village called Echternach on the campsite Martbusch. This campsite is absolutely amazing! They have fairly new sanitary buildings, which are insanely clean for a campsite. And the reception staff is very friendly and helpful.
I haven’t told you the most amazing part of this campsite, which is the walk towards the rock climbing area. It’s only 10-15 minutes through an almost flat forest, with human made stairs! For non-outdoor people who are reading this post a normal approach would be 1.5 hours up the mountains before you arrive at the climbing area. So that’s a real luxury in Berdorf. The area itself has some amazing routes for beginners starting at 4+ and some amazing ones for advanced climbers (around 8a/8b). And of course all sort of routes in between beginner and advanced. Just a heads-up you have to be able to identify yourself when climbing in this area with some kind of membership card. In The Netherlands that would be the NKBV (Dutch Royal Mountaineer Association).
Overall we had an awesome four days in Berdorf. As I said in the beginning you have to be a little lucky with the weather. Though we had some serious rain, we’ve climbed for two whole days outside. We decided to go climbing in Trier on Sunday, because the weather forecast showed a lot of thunder and rain. Trier is a really good place to go climbing when the weather is not that good in Berdorf. It’s a 40 minute drive from Echternach and the climbing gym Cube has some great routes both lead and toprope!
If you like rock climbing and you have a weekend ahead with nice weather I would highly recommend driving to Berdorf! Where do you like to go rock climbing just for the weekend? Let me know in the comments below!
